Sub-Urbano

Sub-Urban

Abrus precatorius seeds on rubber, on aluminum
2 panels, 32 ¼ x 80 ¼ in. each
2003

Ciudad Bolívar is a suburb of the Colombian capital city with a population of over two million living in subhuman conditions. I visited that district and those visit inspired this work which refers to a plowed field where it is paradoxically impossible for life to thrive. The image of the jaguar is a popular Colombian emblem. In this case, we see two of them confronting each other like two brothers fighting.

The rubber floor is a material widely used in public transportation in this city, and the Amazonian seeds are frequently used in indigenous ornamentation.

Parceros

Abrus precatorius seeds on rubber, on aluminum, diptych
23 ½ x 35 ½ in. each
2007–2008

Parcero is a popular neologism synonymous with friend. In this assemblage, the image and the materials make reference both to popular idea wherein the tiger is an emblem of astuteness and sagacity, and to ethnic factors and urban life. The Amazonian seeds express the indigenous root in the lower strata of society, while the rubber indicates industry and urbanism.

In this diptych, the identical feline heads are facing each other, and their aggressive postures refer to the difficult coexistence found in the poor districts in Bogota.
